Introducing the Photonics Online Meetup (POM), an all-online photonics conference

Posted on Wednesday, October 9, 2019

The Photonics Online Meetup (POM) is a joint collaboration with researchers from around the world including Postdoctoral Fellow Orad Reshef from the uOttawa Centre for Research in Photonics, Professor Andrea Armani from the University of Southern California, Igor Aharonovich from UT Sydney, Mikhail Kats from University of Wisconsin-Madison, Rachel Grange from ETH Zurich, and Riccardo Sapienza from Imperial College London.

The idea is to create an all online photonics conference in order to reduce the family burden of conference travel, reduce the carbon footprint and cost of participating in conferences, and make conferences more open and accessible. The meeting is geared to bring together a community of early career and established researchers from universities, industry, and government to amplify the role of optics and photonics in daily life. Ideally, POM will eventually be able to replace travelling to one of the big conferences every year to make a difference in the bottom line.

You can read more about POM on their official website or follow them on Twitter @photonicsmeetup

Congratulations to all involved in this novel initiative!
