Extreme and Quantum Photonics Summer School 2018

June 18 - 22, 2018, uOttawa campus

The Max Planck - uOttawa Centre for Extreme and Quantum Photonics is organizing and hosting a summer school this year that is designed as an in-depth introduction to a wide variety of subjects in Photonics including twisted light, metamaterials, entanglement with photons, and ultrafast laser pulses.

Lecturers include internationally recognized Canadian and International leaders in the fundamental and applied aspect of this field. Talks are specifically designed for senior undergraduates and masters students. Each day will typically have two 120-minute talks and one 120-minute lab. Topics will be developed from basic principles to an introduction in advanced research topics.

Topics and Confirmed Speakers include:

Ultrafast Photonics

  • Lora Ramunno, (Computational nano-optics)
  • Paul Corkum, (Attosecond pulses, high-harmonic generation)
  • Lab: Intro to optical modelling with Python

Nonlinear optics and Plasmonics

  • Robert W. Boyd, (Intro to nonlinear optics, zero index materials)
  • Pierre Berini, (Plasmonic sensing, metamaterials)
  • Lab: The nonlinear Schrodinger Equation with Python

Photonic Materials and Structured Light

  • Jean-Michel Ménard, (THz generation)
  • Ebrahim Karimi, (Twisted Light)
  • Lab Tours and uOttawa grad student poster session

Nano Photonics

  • Ksenia Dolgaleva, (Active integrated-optics)
  • Antonio Badolato, (Silicon photonics)
  • Lab: Lumerical

Quantum Photonics

  • Gerd Leuchs, Max Planck Institute Erlangen
  • Jeff Lundeen, (Intro to quantum optics)
  • Lab: Modelling Quantum Optics with QuTip in Python
